A VEIL OF CENSORSHIP ON MADOI

A veil - a true and  real one - of censorship on Madoi. It is the one that covers, in a literal sense, a good half of the  fresco painted in a remote little church near Cremona, his last artwork dated December 1975, three months before that March 13, 1976, as his ultimate heritage. The two figures, now hidden by a joyful yellow drape,  represent the Madonna and the Magdalene. Reason? Too disturbing in their painful expressions, respectively of a mother to whom they had just killed a son and Magdalene to whom that son had saved her life, as the story tells us, which also makes us understand that at that moment was on stage, to say the  least ,a colossal  tragedy and in that very moment of the  Resurrection, now invoked by the current parish priest in his personal re-proposal of the event, there was no mention.  Actually, even before then, humanity had accomplished and continues to perform as many terrible wikednesses that Madoi had  time to denounce, in as many frescoes and  famous works, now enpowered with long and valuable restorations and object of visits and enrichment for the hosting places  There is no certainty at present that this offense can be washed away and that this nice drape could be removed, and neither that  the indignation generated by this gesture of concealment can save this special fresco. The irony of the moment is the fact that a special event dedicated to Madoi and its famous fresco of 1964 in the Church of Sesta is under way in these very days, for a final final rush towards its total and precious restoration.

RETURN TO SESTA

Return  to  Sesta and to a new March 13, the day of Madoi. While there was a miserably failed and personal attempt not to think, to hide feelings, regrets, pain, anger, fomented by real problems of that "real" life that Madoi so disdained, and then drowned in guilt and renewed love for this heavy inheritance, a small army of precious heroes, continued in their mission of conservation, restoration, decorum, love for that gift to art, to the community, to himself, who knows, that Madoi left in 1964 in that beloved place, Sesta. Here next set in Second Life - go to the page on this site, at least for a roundup of photos, if not to access it to visit - this faithful reproduction is our personal contribution to show it to the millions of users of this platform, all over the world . The number of wows shown by visitors , are a daily surprise, and an incentive - despite the various attempts to ignore it - to continue, to maintain, support, pass on.

JUST BECAUSE IT'S CHRISTMAS

Abbiamo timore a provarci. Just because it's Christmas  we resurface from months of absence, deliberately dedicated to our personal satisfaction and to problems of our exclusive and private interest. It was however disturbing, despite our strong will to ignore its origin, the repeated appeal to deal with, better if with no solution of continuity and with no other interest whatsoever , Madoi's image, person, art and so on.   Even in his absence, that is,  exactly as it happened in  the past, something, someone, event or subtle, subliminal remind, troubles us and makes us go back, reluctantly, to this kind of duty, due to a sort of dissatisfaction of non-doing, incompleteness. It will never end. The next step will be to hide, to put  away all the images, pictures, sculptures, drawings, everything sounding even remotely Madoish, we have around us and /or that could remind us of his presence.  At night, in our nightmares, it would reappear, and we would certainly find the whole lot, physically and in chilling and scattered disorder, at the dawn of the next day. We are afraid to try. And then, anyway it's Christmas, Madoi's BPE Best Party Ever.

NOT TODAY

Non oggi. E neanche domani. Col fiato a metà, nè dentro, nè fuori. In apnea. Posizione scomoda.
Not today. Not even tomorrow. Let's say in a near future or may be never. Let's take time, just to think it over. Or let's keep all undone, unsaid, suspended, open to whomever will come, if he ever will. We are actually at loss of words. Breathless. Not even so, in a sort of apnea. Uncomfortable position. It is so difficult having always to tend to our past, which we dont like being so far away, or to deal with our present which we are forced to like, or to envision  a so long desired future, a beautiful one.   Then, as it may happen, you are gifted with a very special and perfect day, with a strange light that gives the way to a promise miraculously made real, or to a dream  which finally came true, and everything is upside down. You realize that you could just for one moment come out from your hole  and have a look to a new born and bright reality, just to see if it is true that it is true. But not today, not even tomorrow, may be never.  But one never knows.

INTENSITY

Intensità. O nulla. Neppure i ricordi belli, brutti, nulla.
Intensity. Or nothing. Madoi was always waiting for that something  worth of  the strongest emotion, welcoming with the same pathos-like attitude the most compelling turmoil, the most challenging anguish and despair or immense joy,  not necessarily due to or resulting from real facts past, present or forecasted for a near future. Everything was defined old the very nano second after its appearance and consequently forgotten, cancelled, not liveable. Rancor, hate, joy, satisfaction, nice or sad memories, if dated yesterday were a useless burden. There was no time, in Madoi's living, there was no space in his soul always  full of  thoughts so lively and intense, that nothing else could be hosted, like in an house full of old furniture, of old and useless things, unsettling obstacles in his perennial wandering to/from present and future and   he couldnt risk to trip over them or to have the  sight blocked while glaring towards his personal infinite.

SOMETIMES I WONDER...

Sometimes I wonder how could have been my life, our lives, with a father different from that invasive, unique, fascinating and impossibly demanding character of Madoi.  For sure an easier and safer one, undoubtly boring, a life running smoothly on straight and regular tracks, having a physical reference, a safe harbour, paraded with strict rules, do this, dont do that, you have to study why dont you study, you have to keep order in your things, be good, this house is not an hotel - oh! sublime words, unfortunately never heard, but may be we had to said them...on one of our parents return - and more ..we wont always be here for you and other wonderful parental litanies.  What a great comfort would have been having these easy mini daily options to choose from, tasting the thrill of an act of disobedience instead of being  so free of choosing on so many windows and doors always open on an immense world that ,  knowing nothing about   we couldnt be afraid of.  And hundreds, thousands of possibilities we could test and savour since little kids, with no safety net,  and fear was something wonderful and unexplored, a kind of eighth or ninth art that we still dont even know. There is always a way out, a remedy, even at the very final step, because we survive, they say, and if not, who cares , stopping so to be a concern. That is, the worst that could happen is that you dont make it, in cruel words, you die. But all the rest till that very moment is life. And we take the best of it.  And this is a great lesson we are sure we could not have from no one else but our father. And what about "you have never to do what I do" meaning "I'll be so kind to show you how you have not to behave.  I am straining myself to give you the bad example for your better understanding". Superb. And so, to underline his unintentional far-sightedness, we grew up in the best possible way, strong and die-hard optimists, with high values of morality and honesty, close to ingenuity - as Madoi's himself - and above all  fearless, forward and confident ladies, perfectly capable to deal with anyone on an equal level. One of Madoi's best quote was that even the most powerful person in the world have to use the toilet, sooner or later. And so, let's take him down from wherever he climbed, let's order him to sit down and to listen to what we have to say.

SESTA, REWIND

Sesta, rewind.
Fonte Archivi FIWM).
Sesta. Let's rewind the tape of memories. Back to 1963 when Madoi fell desperately in love with Sesta, a tiny village in the highlands of Parma. Four or five little houses, some twenty persons, a church, stone walls. For Madoi it was enough. He started with the Church, painting the paintable, ceiling inclusive, ending to paint all the walls he could find available to/from the residence he had set up in the meantime. Then he went away, we went away, trying to bury all our memories. On the contrary, superb witnesses of those moments, kids in those times, masters now, never gave up,  in total loneliness during perennial winters in that little mountain place, trying to avert the effects of neglect and to focus the attention towards that masterpiece magically appeared inside that Church more than 40 years before and which was now crumbling before their eyes day after day.  Thanks to this stubborn persistence, directed with masterly skill by Nando Donnini, an early teen in Madoi's time, and from then on guardian of his artistic legacy in Sesta, they are  able to unveil in these very days the conclusion of the first phase  of the strategic recovery of a part of this great artwork. Esedra Restauri, leader in artistic restoration, on the wave of their recent and exceptional success in restoring a wide church apse painted by Madoi in 1966 in Parma, invested their time, passion and competence in the project of giving back the initial splendour to this wonder. But it is not enough. To this small but important phase it should immediately follow a global restoration of this wide painting, and this should happen fast. Taken for granted the solidarity and technical,  bureaucratic support expressed by the local Institutions, the real funds, i.e. money, to be added to the small but significative sum gathered so far amongst private sympathizers, and used for this very first emergency, are now top and urgent priority to be able to continue with the realization of the restoration of this precious legacy left by Madoi. This is definitely an appeal for funds to whomever might be willing to participate.  Let us say that, if any collector having one or more Madoi's artworks -  in the major cases given by Madoi's himself as presents - would be so kind to give the smallest of sum for each of them, it would certainly be possible to gather an amount large enough to restore more than one project of this kind.
