WE HAVE SET THEM FREE

Li abbiamo liberati.

We freed them. . Involved without even asking, Isabella and Walter Madoi, our parents, and  trapped  in a Foundation.  Involuntary witnesses of so many exhibitions, celebratory events, discussions, successes and disappointments floods of words,  they have always entrenched themselves in total silence - for us assent. Never a nod, never a light, nothing. Since its establishment in 2007, not even the choice of January 17, a special day for both of them and which should have softened even the stones, the Foundation in their name was acclaimed as recognized, appreciated by all, except by them. Almost 17 - 17, again - years after that date, by dissolving this bond, we believe that in  freeding them, we have practically removed the frame. Now we continue alone, as always, actually,  even if we felt protected by their logo - see left, but with the frame - which represented them. We continue alone, with what we have left, that is everything, with the difference that now - thanks to the Foundation work - the archives,  the collections in our hands are in perfect order, catalogued with obsessive care, and with all the memories - theirs inclusive -  well documented. All these treasures are with us, they will remain beyond us. Let's at least hope that now they feel relieved, free from human enclosures and now  able to wander towards other things, in other worlds.

Pinacoteca Stuard, Parma, 27 Gennaio - 6 Marzo 2022.
"Between East and West, a Wall to Paint"
This title, perhaps  of an article in a newspaper of the time, it was 1967, identifies Madoi's project  to paint the Berlin Wall on the two sides East and West . The project never saw the light.  Here Madoi is in the courtyard of his atelier in Parma, surrounded by meters and meters of preparatory sketches scattered everywhere and that  would be presented during a press conference a few days later. He was confident, he had already had half of the confirmations. The other half  was taken for granted. It was not so. His anger was destructive. He tore apart all the sketches around his view. Just few of them were safely  hidden from his fury. Since 2002, with Isabella Carenini Madoi's  donation of 53 Madoi artworks, some of these precious drawings - part of said donation - are owned by the Municipality of Parma and will be exhibited in these days.  Pinacoteca Stuard, Parma, January 27 - March 6 2022.

BACK TO MEMORIES

Back to  memories. Like those in this image. Madoi in a cloud of smoke sitting at  his favorite table, at Il  Ventoso, his residence  in Sesta. Sesta always in the memories of those who ran away , that is all of us, and of the one  who  never left and who has always worked for  keeping alive this heritage with the utmost care, promoting events year after year aiming at the  long and delicate restorations of all the art works of Madoi that in the 1960s  invaded this tiny village. Thanks Nando, from Madoi, from all of us.

CELEBRATING PROMETEO

Celebriamo Prometeo.
Let's celebrate Prometheus. As a much loved symbol by Madoi showing the same self-distructive generosity. Paid dearly,   legend or truth, who knows. His whole life, of Madoi, not of Prometheus, was set in this pursuit for the good - of others - the transmission of values, ethics, honesty, already not very fashionable in his times. This picture, (Prometheus, oil on canvas, 1968, private collection), already shown here, see  post of April 25, 2013, and not surprisingly, since it is a celebration of that Resistance which Madoi fought for,    from 1943 to  1945 (by the way, he was 18, in 1943))   offering his youth and bringing back - fortunately - his life. Madoi then "gave it back" at the end of the same, using his last months for a bronze monument which was unveiled on April 25, 1975 (San Donato, Milan). Closing a circle. He was the best possible Director of his life movie.

NEW HORIZON

Sole, come sempre. Vero, mamma? (1965, Isabella, olio su tela, 50 x 70 cm, particolare)
A new horizon. In your name, according to what we believe  has always been  your tip. We don't know for sure, we just feel it, maybe we are wrong. Maybe we will never know, or maybe yes, it depends on the   evolution of things. Which can happen in many ways, though  so far we have had little hints that we are in the right. Maybe we are wrong. Or maybe not. What is certain is that now our physical  horizon is different, no longer lost in a nice but useless void or projected in  a future that seemed unattainable, and now achieved - we think, though in a small part, in a  more  focused way on the important things which may be now possible.  It's on us, just  the two of us, as always   Alone, as always. But that's okay. We would like your consent, stated, clear and  understandable. We would like some assistance, a real support.  We would like to be right, and to be sure that we are. Now we are facing steps of completion, of possible closure, let's say a phase of accomplishment of a self-imposed mission. Missing concrete answers to all these wewouldliketos,  we go on. Alone, as always. Isnt' it, mom?(1965, Isabella, oil on canvas, 50 x 70 cm, detail)

BACK TO SQUARE ONE

Tornare dove tutto è cominciato. O quasi. Wow!
Back  to where it all started. Almost. Let's go back to 1964, winter, spring and then summer, till to the day of the unveilment of this fresco, in Sesta, in the Church and then a race until 1976, another winter. Then nothing or almost nothing. Silence, removal, life that takes other roads, different ones, where Madoi had to be only a surname, sort of celeb name, cumbersome but removed  from those places lived for a short but very intense period. The  imprint left by Madoi in those places, however, seemed to be  indelible,    present,  intense, emotionally cared for by the people who physically related to the reality of a legacy that gradually, year after year - and many have passed - and despite the impromptu emergencies, was disappearing , crumbling day by day. It seems that all this is ending. In the sense of a starck and proud start over,  in a  restoration of thought, before everything else, of remembrance, of pride of belonging, of soul and mind. All of this  as essential element of  a real, precious, technical, meticulous restoration, taking cues from Madoi's life, his  abused life, as if to throw it away because he sensed he  had other things to do, in that other next life , a magnificent, free one,  with limitless white walls to paint endlessly. Wow!

EASTER IS OVER

Easter is  over and spring is at its peak. Let's go for  Easter that Madoi usually spent installed in his hideaway at Sesta spoiled by  a heterogeneous and endless court of friends, so relatively happy , having them  engaged in a sort of American "Egg Race, which actually is an Egg Roll" i.e. that at the end of it all of them  - the chocolate eggs -  had to be taken to Madoi' s table  who smashed them with his fist. Spring, spring  is the situation that irritated Madoi at this stage. Because after this almost bearable period,  Summer usually arrives and, even if  spent in Sesta as the only place in the world  in crisis time,  it was still a source of frustration and self induced inactivity given the lack of inspiration.  Too many colors, too much light, too much noise, too many people, too much everything, hot inclusive. This yearly and seasonly mood went along till his very  last summer, the one of 1975, where all this, put in the "unbearable items" and loudly  detested for 49 years, was never enough.
